MOZAMBIQUE
General Information / Health Care System

Mozambique is located on the east coast of southern Africa. It is divided into 10 provinces in addition to the capital city of Maputo. Portuguese is the official language, but many other languages are spoken as well. Mozambique gained independence from Portugal in 1975.

A prolonged civil war lasting from 1977 to 1992 hindered the country's development, but since the end of the fighting substantial progress has been made. The National Health Service has expanded significantly, particularly in rural areas; a restructuring of the workforce has taken place and expenditure for training has increased.

The country has over 19 million inhabitants; about 50% of the population are under 18 years of age. The average life expectancy is less than 40 years; life expectancy has decreased in the past few years due to the serious HIV/AIDS epidemic. The Ministry of Health has developed a national strategic plan to combat HIV/AIDS. Other priorities for the Ministry of Health are malaria, cholera, polio, measles, tuberculosis, immunisations and leprosy control.

Health services are provided by both the government and the private sector.
